Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee Leverages Billhighway Give to Reach Fundraising Goals

05/09/2013

FSPAC LogoBillhighway is proud to welcome the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) as a new client.  The FSPAC will use Billhighway Give, a mobile fundraising tool that accepts credit and debit card payments, at two events this summer – the NICF seminar in August and at a lobbyist-run event for staffers in congressional offices.  Give will be used to secure donations at both events to help FSPAC further its mission to provide financial aid to the campaigns of federal office candidates who support the objectives of fraternity life.

FSPAC, which consists of both collegiate and alumnae participants, hosts a number of events where people are brought together to support the fraternal public policy agenda.  Studies have shown that those who use mobile fundraising as part of an overall event strategy can raise up to 180% more funds than those who don’t.  By utilizing Billhighway Give, the FSPAC can take donations onsite quickly and easily and provide options for donors who don’t carry cash or a checkbook.

“Billhighway Give is a great marketing tool that helps promote the FSPAC as the fundraising arm of our efforts,” said founding board member and current FSPAC president Cindy Stellhorn.  “The ability to fundraise on the fly was very appealing to us.  We chose to work with Billhighway because they have been a great business partner to the fraternal community and we wanted to support their work.”

Billhighway Give is a mobile fundraising and event solution that enables nonprofits to collect contributions, accept ticket sales or auction bids in a fast and secure manner, all while on the go. Through the payment process, critical donor information is collected and can be imported into a donor management system for continued nurturing and relationship building. Give was created exclusively for nonprofit organizations to bring together data integration, branding, campaign tracking and motivational tools like no other mobile application on the market.

Spotlight On: Billhighway’s Adams Fellow

04/23/2013

Billhighway is fortunate to be a host company for the 2012-2013 Adams Entrepreneurial Fellowship program through Automation Alley.  We’ve had the pleasure of working with Kevin Tuczek, an Adams Fellowship recipient and 2011 Wayne State University MBA graduate, since August of 2012.  Kevin works at Billhighway as a Growth Development Analyst and has taken on a variety of challenges including spearheading channel partner development and client implementation.  We sat down with Kevin and asked him a few questions about his experience so far.

Kevin Tuczek, Growth Development Analyst at Billhighway and 2012-2013 Adams Fellowship recipient

Kevin Tuczek, Growth Development Analyst at Billhighway and 2012-2013 Adams Entrepreneurial Fellowship recipient

BH: This April marks your 8th month with Billhighway.  How has your role as Growth Development Analyst changed?

KT: My role has changed multiple times during the fellowship, which is a great thing because it gives me a true taste of the rapidly-changing nature of entrepreneurship.  I’ve gone from doing indirect sales management, to direct sales operations, to now leading new client implementations.  And it might change again!  I consider the variety of roles, and the strategy behind each one, to be a huge benefit of the relationship.

BH: Can you highlight one project that you’ve led, worked on or contributed to that has been most memorable for you and why?

KT: The one I’m working on right now – implementing a new client onto our system – is becoming increasingly memorable for a number of reasons.  First, it’s for a new market in our business, so it’s fun and exciting to break new ground in that regard.  Second, the project allows me to interact will all facets of our business and learn about what our system can do, and perhaps more importantly, what more it can do in the future.  And lastly, as leader on the project, I’m going down two parallel paths of completing the project and also creating a framework for future implementations.  It’s the culmination of all I’ve learned at Billhighway so far!

BH: Entrepreneur and Program Director Terry Cross helps mentor the fellows and provides books to read.  What does he have you reading now and what have you learned from it?

KT: Currently, Terry has us reading “The Art of the Start” by Guy Kawasaki.  While I just started it, so far it’s teaching me about the realities of starting any business and further cementing that starting a company is a difficult and highly uncertain exercise.  Terry also had us read books about networking, business development, product strategy and other topics.  All in all, I think it’s great to keep the learning going, and when someone like Terry says it’s a good idea to read something, you better read it!

BH: What have you learned from other fellows in the program?

KT: I love getting together with other fellows because we bounce problems off each other, brainstorm together and most importantly, help each other out.  Even though we are at different companies doing different things, we experience a lot of the same challenges!  One of the main things I’ve learned from the other fellows is that when you surround yourself with really good people, you can make great things happen.  This has proven true with each of us at our respective companies because we all work with great people, as well as when we get together outside of work.  Collectively, we’ve been able to help each other solve problems and generate ideas.  I’m fully confident that we’ll stay connected long after this fellowship program is complete.

BH: What advice would you give to new fellows entering the program?

KT: I would tell new fellows that they should be prepared to work hard to make a substantial impact and soak up as much knowledge as possible.  I think all the fellows have had many opportunities to learn and make a difference, and if you’re not ready and willing to take full advantage of those, you won’t maximize the fellowship experience.  Simply put – work hard, listen a lot, and bite off as much as you can chew.  Do that and you’ll be in a good position to succeed.

BH: Has your experience as an Adams fellow altered your long range vision for your career/life, and if so how?

KT: The Adams Fellowship experience has undoubtedly altered my vision in a positive way.  Going into it, I thought the fellowship could be a catalyst for my future endeavors and a way for me to expand my network with the kinds of people I want to associate with over the long-term.  It’s done that and more.  I’ve had “in the trenches” experiences with Billhighway that taught me important first-hand lessons like how to pursue a new market, for instance.  The Adams Fellowship was a goal of mine since I first heard about it and it hasn’t disappointed in any way.  It’s been a continued stream of meaningful experiences and great people.

Sigma Phi Lambda Sorority Selects Billhighway for Enterprise Payment Solution

04/09/2013

Billhighway welcomes its newest client, Sigma Phi Lambda, a national women’s Christian sorority headquartered in Lubbock, Texas.  Billhighway will implement its online group payment system to automate invoicing and dues collection for the sorority’s 30 chapters and 2,200 members.

Sigma Phi Lambda is a national Christian sorority with 30 chapters and 2,200 members. The group just celebrated its 25 year anniversary.

Sigma Phi Lambda began researching payment systems in late 2012 in an effort to offer online, e-check and credit card payment options to its members.  Additionally with Billhighway, users can make payments securely over the phone through interactive voice response (IVR), through the mail or via a mobile device.  The sorority evaluated solutions from GreekBill, OmegaFi and Legacy Financial before making the decision to work with Billhighway.

“One benefit of Billhighway’s system is the level of control offered at the Executive level,” stated Caryn Bell, Director of Finance at Sigma Phi Lambda.  “Moving to a system that includes integrated banking and accounting gives us visibility into individual chapter finances to make better decisions.  The cherry on top is that through the entire evaluation process, Billhighway showed amazing customer service in their responsiveness, accessibility and patience.  From eight years of corporate and nonprofit experience I can say that type of focus is rare.”

Billhighway’s enterprise financial management solution integrates payment processing, online banking and accounting into one system, eliminating reconciliation and facilitating smarter financial decision making through real-time analytics.   Higher education clients typically cut costs, raise revenues, increase collection percentages and productivity due to the visibility the solution provides.

Noted Tracy-Ann Palmer, Chief Growth Officer at Billhighway, “We are thrilled to welcome Sigma Phi Lambda aboard as our newest Enterprise client.  In addition to providing multiple payment options for members, we look forward to improving operational efficiency at both the national and chapter level, freeing up members to spend more time focusing on mission and philanthropy.”

Think Green, B-Green and Share Some Good

04/02/2013

Billhighway celebrates 50 days of encouraging environmental leadership.

With Earth Day just around the corner on April 22nd, Billhighway acknowledges how small acts of environmental responsiveness can make a difference with its ‘b-greener’ campaign.

Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 mature trees and 7,000 gallons of water*

A Delta Phi Epsilon chapter was the recipient of a "Random Act of Surprise" as part of Billhighway's 'b-greener' campaign.

A Delta Phi Epsilon chapter was the recipient of a “Random Act of Surprise” as part of Billhighway’s ‘b-greener’ campaign.

Billhighway’s ‘b-greener’ campaign comprises 50 days of celebration running March 4-April 22 and includes the following initiatives:

  • Sharing of a “Daily Green” on Twitter – for every day leading up to Earth Day, Billhighway is sharing a green fact or tip via tweet.  Some of the tips have been inspired by Billhighway team members, such as the one below, from an employee who has taken the initiative at home to use barrels to capture rain water to water his garden and yard.
  • In 2012 a single Billhighway team member launched “The Green Team” in an effort to ‘b-greener’ around the office.  The company added recycling bins for paper products that are taken to an outdoor pickup location each week.  Nearly 50% of the company’s employees have volunteered to be on the team.  This year bins for plastic waste were added to increase the recycling effort.
  • Billhighway has made an effort to recognize its clients who are making strides to ‘b-greener’ as well.  Clients who use the Billhighway Prepaid Card are saving are saving paper by reducing their use of checks.  To help encourage and reward this environmentally responsible behavior, they company has awarded over $1,000 in cash to 11 customers who have reduced their paper waste by utilizing the prepaid card.  As an added incentive, each week a client who uses the prepaid card is the recipient of a “Random Act of Surprise” – locally baked cupcakes delivered to their doorstep.
  • Teaming Up – Billhighway has partnered with Herff Jones, the official jeweler to college fraternities, sororities and honor societies, to offer client chapters who reduce their paper waste a chance to win $50 towards their next Herff Jones purchase.

“Every little bit makes a difference,” shared Michelle Lange, Chief Marketing Officer at Billhighway.  “We have learned that an annual supply of Billhighway checks uses 132 trees and emits nearly 20 tons of hazardous CO2, enough oxygen to support the lives of 264 people.  If we can help change that, even a little bit at a time, we’re going to give it our best shot.”

First-Class Fellow: What It’s Like to Work at Billhighway

03/07/2013

In the second half of our interview with Challenge Detroit fellow Isaac Gilman, we hear more about what projects he’s worked on as part of Billhighway’s marketing department.

Billhighway:  What’s the most interesting or compelling project you have worked on so far at Billhighway?

challenge Detroit intern at Billhighway

Isaac Gilman works with Billhighway’s marketing and growth teams

IG:  One major project I have worked on is mobile card reader competitive analysis. I was tasked with the project only a month into my fellowship to help support the go-to-market plan for Give, Billhighway’s mobile fundraising application.  Give helps nonprofits raise more money faster by accepting credit or debit cards using a smartphone.  The product looks and feels similar to Square, PayAnywhere or Intuit’s Go Payment, but it is much more unique. Give is not a point of sale application, rather it is a fundraising tool that can be used to collect donations, sell event or raffle tickets, or collect silent auction payments.  For my project I conducted online research, requested card readers and collected pricing information to see how our application stacked up against the competition.  A critical analysis component was that of product packaging.  My research proved invaluable in final decision making on how to package and ship the mobile card readers that accompany the Give application.  I presented my findings, insights and opportunities to management prior to submission of Give to the App Store for distribution.  Overall, it was a fantastic experience, especially at such an early stage in my fellowship.

Billhighway:  What skills have you learned on the job at Billhighway?

IG:  I am learning so much about marketing strategies, sales cycles, and simply how to run a business.  I’ve found corporate marketing is almost no different than city marketing.  Coming from urban planning, I was not exactly sure how applicable my skills would be for a role in Billhighway’s marketing department, but I soon found it was a natural fit.  When tackling an urban problem you must do extensive research to learn what makes the city tick.  After that you want to try and brainstorm solutions leveraging intelligence and case studies.  Finally you recommend your findings to your client and hope they follow your advice.

In marketing it starts with research; for Billhighway, this is the nonprofit world.  Discovering who the key players are in the market and developing relationships is essential.  We spend a significant amount of time educating ourselves on people’s individual pain points within the nonprofit organization, from leadership to finance to fund development; everyone has different issues that keep them up at night.  We then learn more about the different verticals within the nonprofit market like faith-based, community service or food bank organizations and how our solutions fit into each sector.  All of these factors combined help drive marketing decisions.

I continue to learn more about marketing every day, but I’ve also been exposed to sales, or growth, as we call it at Billhighway.  I work closely with our sales team, we all sit in the same room, where I can be part of conversations about sales cycles and get debriefed on client meetings.  I am learning that an enterprise sale is a slow process that needs to be strategic and thoughtful.  Creating and mastering relationships is key to keeping clients satisfied and helping to create a sustainable business.

Because I work at a small business, the CEO and other executives are approachable and transparent.  I’ve learned to own my own work; and not to worry about what others do, just take responsibility for what I do.  In order to succeed, decisions need to be made quickly, and actions need to swiftly follow.  You don’t have to make perfect decisions, but you do need to make decisions.

Billhighway:  What do you like most about working at Billhighway?  Where do you see yourself in 12 months?

IG:  What’s not to like about Billhighway…I think that may be the best way to put it.  Billhighway provides so many great opportunities it can be overwhelming at times.  The office environment is amazing.  I recently completed grad school where work was typically done within a team; spending hours together in one room to accomplish a task.  Billhighway’s culture is no different.  We each have our own spaces, but I almost always work with my marketing team or the growth team.  When we put our heads together we collectively strengthen our individual work, ideas flow and opportunities turn into real progress.

Everyone at Billhighway believes in the core values of the company and tries to accomplish all tasks above and beyond the desired outcome.  This just re-enforces the great working environment.  If someone is having a bad day or week, a team member is there to pick you up.

Because Billhighway is a small company we can move quickly in many directions.  If one technique is not generating enough leads, we can pivot and try something else.  Likewise Billhighway is employee friendly. If I need to work from home for an afternoon, I have that option; if I want to volunteer for a morning and then come to work in the afternoon, I have that option; and if I feel my time isn’t being used properly I can freely seek ways to improve my productivity.

I am not completely sure where I see myself in 12 months, but I do have a few requirements. First and foremost I want to stay in Detroit; it’s a great place and I love being here.  With that said, I want my next endeavor to continue to focus on the city and its well-being to feed my Detroit addiction.  I don’t need to be a traditional urban planner, and to some extent I don’t want to be.  My degree allows me to look at the city as an organism for regional prosperity and I want to bolster this prosperity by any means possible.  I would love to stay at Billhighway because I love everything about it.  Regardless of what happens after my fellowship, I will cherish my experience here and am grateful to be a part of Billhighway and Challenge Detroit.

Billhighway Give Mobile Fundraising Application Empowers Nonprofits to Raise More Money Faster

Fundraisers can process credit and debit cards on the go using a smartphone

Customizable Billhighway Give Donation Screen

Customizable Billhighway Give Donation Screen

Billhighway announces the availability of Billhighway Give, an app that brings together data integration, branding, campaign tracking and motivational tools like no other product on the market.  Give was created exclusively for nonprofit organizations and is now available to download for free on the App StoreSM.

Billhighway allows fundraisers to take credit and debit card payments using their smartphone and a card reader.  Give is currently available on the iOS platform and can be used to bring in more revenue from onsite donations, silent auctions, and event ticket and merchandise sales.  Give can be used at a variety of nonprofit fundraising events including sports tournaments, concerts, run-walk-ride events and more.

“With Billhighway Give, nonprofits can collect payments in minutes, and increase their donor pool to include those who don’t carry cash or checks regularly,” said Tracy-Ann Palmer, Chief Growth Officer at Billhighway.  “Our mission is to help nonprofits reach theirs; and the availability of Give on the App Store puts us on a glidepath to achieving that.”

The Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) reported in December 2011 that organizations can raise 180% more funds using mobile technology over traditional methods.  The Nonprofit Fundraising Study, released in April 2012 by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative reported that online and special events were the only fundraising methods that increased by more than 50%, while others like grants, direct mail and major gifts decreased.  With statistics like this, it only makes sense that nonprofits incorporate mobile technology into their fundraising mix.

Billhighway Give highlights include:

  1. Custom branding capability – nonprofits can upload their logo and imagery to present a polished professional look donors will trust
  2. Campaign tracking – create multiple campaigns that can be easily accessed through the app to track a variety of initiatives including ticket or merchandise sales, donations or silent auction checkout
  3. Leaderboard functionality – incentivize your volunteers to compete against each other to raise more money faster, and view real-time statistics through the app
  4. Simple pricing – one low transaction rate regardless of credit card type
  5. Security – data is transferred through a 256-bit encrypted connection, SSL-certified by DigiCert and never stored on the device
  6. Integration – connect the data and dollars from the app to your accounting and donor management system quickly and easily

“Billhighway Give is so unbelievably easy…we talk about the team at Billhighway all the time here in the office and to other clients on how great you are…you are officially our favorites!” – Scott Sarrels, Executives Club of Chicago

Billhighway Takes Bronze at 2013 Stevie® Awards

Katie Hayes (l) and Kim Ng (r), accept the Bronze Stevie Award for Innovation in Customer Service

Katie Hayes (l) and Kim Ng (r), accept the Bronze Stevie Award for Innovation in Customer Service

Billhighway’s Client Care team was presented with a Bronze Stevie® Award in the Innovation in Customer Service category in the 7th annual Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service this past Monday.

The awards were presented to honorees during a gala banquet on February 25th at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.  More than 300 nominated customer service and sales executives from the U.S. and several other countries attended.  More than 100 members of eight specialized judging committees determined Stevie Award placements from among the Finalists during final judging this year.

Billhighway was in good company at this years awards, other nominees in the same category of computer services and software included Cisco Systems, Informatica Corporation and Norton by Symantec.

The Client Care team plays an integral role in the success of the company; in fact it is so important that management requires all new hires to spend one week training with Client Care.  This provides a first-hand look at customer issues and the cross-functional role the team plays in helping to maintain a 96% customer loyalty rate.

States Client Care Team Leader Kim Ng, “I’m so proud of the accomplishments we have made as a team and the national recognition we’ve received for it.  It’s our philosophy that no customer interaction is over until the problem is solved.  This sets us apart from many other contact centers today, where efficiency is more important than quality and customer health.”

To back that sentiment up, below are a few testimonials from current Billhighway clients:

“…the response was almost instantaneous – within an hour – very helpful!”  -Golden Key administrator

“Billhighway has a great client support team. I know I can call anytime and always get the answers I need. Thanks so much for all of your help!” Higher Education Client, Miami University

“Thanks for the prompt service….I sure wish other businesses could manage prompt service! I am a business owner, so I really respect and appreciate good service.” - American Buildings, Inc.

Checking in with our Challenge Detroit Fellow

02/26/2013
Isaac and a friend during a Halloween party for Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, an organization he volunteers for.

Isaac and a friend during a Halloween party for Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, an organization he volunteers for.

Billhighway is proud to be part of Challenge Detroit, an exciting, year-long initiative that retains and attracts 30 of the best and brightest young professionals to make a difference in the city of Detroit.  To commemorate the six-month mark of his journey, our own Challenge Detroit fellow, Isaac Gilman, has graciously agreed to participate in a short interview to bring us up to speed on his experience so far.

Isaac has been working as an associate in Billhighway’s marketing department since August 2012.  In this first installment of a two-part interview, Isaac shares with us his highlights on the four pillars of the Challenge Detroit program; live, work, play and give.

Billhighway: What is your favorite thing about living in Detroit? What neighborhood do you live in and what is your favorite thing about this neighborhood?

IG: There are so many events, shows, bars and restaurants, the options are endless.  It’s also so easy to bike around the city.  While known as the motor city, part of the culture change that’s happening is the consistent practice of biking around town.  The city is flat with wide roads and light traffic and you save on gas and parking in addition to being able to discover hidden gems you don’t notice while in a car.   Finally, everyone I meet wants to see Detroit succeed.  The strong sense of community and collaboration creates a wonderful identity that I love immersing myself in every day.

I live in Midtown, which is centrally located and equidistant to Downtown, Corktown, New Center, Eastern Market, Woodbridge, and Lafayette Park.  There are great music venues (Magic Stick, DSO), places to eat and drink (Motor City Brewing, Shangri-La, The Bronx Bar, Atlas Bistro), and a diverse group of people because of the institutions nearby (Wayne State, DMC).

Billhighway: What are some of the things you do for fun when you aren’t working or participating in your team challenges?

IG: I love hanging out with my friends, many of which are also Challenge Detroit fellows.  After a challenge day (Friday), we go out and grab drinks at a new place we haven’t been to before. It’s so exciting to explore new places in the city.  On Saturdays I almost always go to Eastern Market to shop for produce and try samples.  I always try to attend at least a few of the countless events that are happening every week, such as the recent Detroit Winter Blast.  For me, playing in Detroit is like being a kid in a candy store; I want to do everything.

Billhighway: Tell us more about how you are giving through the Challenge Detroit Program. What has been your favorite team challenge to date and why? In your opinion, why is it so important to give back to the community?

IG: A personal philosophy of mine is to give to the community, and Challenge Detroit encourages this by providing a number of volunteer opportunities for the fellows every week.  So far our collective team has completed over 500 hours of community service!  Giving back to the city you live, work and play in is a great way to learn more about your environment and helps you understand some of the struggles people go through on a daily basis.

My favorite challenge so far was our most recent one with Excellent Schools Detroit which focused on enrollment issues.  In Detroit, children can enroll in almost any school in the city, regardless of address.  Although some restrictions apply, many children enroll in multiple schools before deciding on one. This makes it difficult for each school to predict enrollment from year to year, and makes it difficult to manage budgets properly.

We proposed four recommendations to improve the enrollment process: a school enrollment hotline to keep parents informed, a mobile or permanent kiosk that provides a physical location for one-on-one education advisement, a grant program to encourage collaboration between schools, and a common application system to provide a streamlined electronic enrollment process.  Together we believe these ideas could transform the Detroit Public School enrollment issues into a positive experience.

Check back next week for the second part of our interview with Isaac!

Challenge Detroit is accepting applications for its second year program through March 3rd.  Read on for details or visit the Challenge Detroit website.

Random Acts of Kindness Week Recap

Keeping in spirit with Billhighway’s promotion of Random Acts of Kindness Week, some staffers took it to heart and went out of their way to make others in the office feel special last week.

Similar to being “Boo’ed” at Halloween, or participating in Secret Santa, Billhighway team members surprised others with food, baby gifts, lottery tickets and more!  We created a flyer explaining the purpose of the activity and encouraged everyone to get involved and endorse the benefits of Random Acts of Kindness Week.

To highlight a few of our kindness recipients during the week:

Kelly McNamara, Client Care Associate

Doug received lottery tickets and a granola bar last Monday from our CMO Michelle Lange.  Michelle shook things up a bit by walking into the Growth office and asking all five team members to choose a number between 1-23.  Whoever guessed the number she was thinking of or closest to it, received the gift.  Doug was the lucky winner!

Kelly received a fresh fruit salad and homemade s’mores to sweeten up her morning.  The sweets gave her the options to indulge in a healthy breakfast and a tasty morning treat.

Carolyn received a three-piece baby gift set.  Carolyn is pregnant with her first child and the gift was a welcome surprise!  She will certainly put it to good use once her newborn arrives in just a few short months.

These are a few examples of the kindness that flowed through the office last week.  Even when it’s not Random Acts of Kindness week, Billhighway always attempts to do more good in the company and the community.

How did you honor Random Acts of Kindness Week?  Leave us a comment! #rakweek

Did you know that International Corporate Philanthropy Day is February 25th?  This takes place on the fourth Monday in February and is an international advocacy day intended to build awareness of corporate-community partnerships and to inspire businesses around the world to engage further.

Fun Fact:  The Empire State Building in New York and the clock tower of the Wrigley Building in Chicago light each year in blue and green for International Corporate Philanthropy Day.

Here’s to my Mentors – John Schelske

And last but not least…the final installment in our Here’s to my Mentor’s series, from our Chief Operating Officer, John Schelske.JohnSchleske_headshot

I like to tell people that potential mentors are all around you.  Don’t wait for a formal program, but look around you at the people you respect or would like to emulate. Most people are happy to share their approaches and experiences, if you show an interest.  Further, when you do find the right role model, the mentoring will come naturally and evolve at its own pace.

I have had experiences at different types of businesses before coming to Billhighway. Throughout my career I’ve been involved in formal and informal mentoring programs.  For me, the informal relationships created the most impact in my career.  I think the reason I enjoyed the informal mentoring model the most, was a result of the natural evolution of the relationships.

I had a few supervisors that made big impressions on me early in my career.  I learned a lot by observing and asking questions .  For instance, early in my career, I had one manager that really helped me with priority setting.   He looked at each situation and thought about what type of impact that you could make on the situation, and in some cases, what was the worst thing that could happen.  This simple thought process is something that I use today, when thinking about how to prioritize potential activities.
