Random Acts of Kindness Week Recap

Keeping in spirit with Billhighway’s promotion of Random Acts of Kindness Week, some staffers took it to heart and went out of their way to make others in the office feel special last week.

Similar to being “Boo’ed” at Halloween, or participating in Secret Santa, Billhighway team members surprised others with food, baby gifts, lottery tickets and more!  We created a flyer explaining the purpose of the activity and encouraged everyone to get involved and endorse the benefits of Random Acts of Kindness Week.

To highlight a few of our kindness recipients during the week:

Kelly McNamara, Client Care Associate

Doug received lottery tickets and a granola bar last Monday from our CMO Michelle Lange.  Michelle shook things up a bit by walking into the Growth office and asking all five team members to choose a number between 1-23.  Whoever guessed the number she was thinking of or closest to it, received the gift.  Doug was the lucky winner!

Kelly received a fresh fruit salad and homemade s’mores to sweeten up her morning.  The sweets gave her the options to indulge in a healthy breakfast and a tasty morning treat.

Carolyn received a three-piece baby gift set.  Carolyn is pregnant with her first child and the gift was a welcome surprise!  She will certainly put it to good use once her newborn arrives in just a few short months.

These are a few examples of the kindness that flowed through the office last week.  Even when it’s not Random Acts of Kindness week, Billhighway always attempts to do more good in the company and the community.

Did you know that International Corporate Philanthropy Day is February 25th?  This takes place on the fourth Monday in February and is an international advocacy day intended to build awareness of corporate-community partnerships and to inspire businesses around the world to engage further.

Fun Fact:  The Empire State Building in New York and the clock tower of the Wrigley Building in Chicago light each year in blue and green for International Corporate Philanthropy Day.

Random Acts of Kindness Week (Part II)

02/11/2013

We’re back with Part II of our Random Acts of Kindness Week post.  Take a look at the five ideas below you can implement today…or any day.  The beauty of Random Acts of Kindness Week is to inspire you to do good whenever it strikes you, which is when people least expect it and it’s appreciated the most!Wilson_angel

  1. Adopt a Solider - Soldiers get lonely too, especially overseas.  Having a daily pen pal or encouraging mentor can be extremely helpful to a warrior who is working 24/7 to defend our country. Any form of encouragement or help towards the brave can go a long way. It can be as simple as sending a letter to a solider with your gratitude.  If you feel that is not enough, send a care package.  A care package should consist of items that are not readily available for soldiers: favorite/regional foods or snacks, hygiene products, and simple souvenirs that may bring a sense of home to the solider.  There are several websites you can reference to get started:  Adopt a soldier here:  Soldier’s Angels, Adopt a US Soldier, or Adopt a Platoon.
  2. Host a Food Drive - Many people struggle with food security, but you can help! By creating a food drive, either on your own or at work/school etc., you can help provide dinner and future pantry food for those who struggle to put a meal on their table every night.  If you are working alone, first take stock of what food you have on hand to donate.  Afterward, you can try going to your neighbors to see if they would like to donate food to you or to the food pantry directly. If you are working with a team from work or school, set up a bin to take in donations. Finally, if none of these options work, you can always volunteer your time at a local food pantry later in the year, especially during the holidays.  Learn more at Feeding America and The Global FoodBanking Network.
  3. Donate Blood - Nearly 4.5 million Americans are saved each year because of blood transfusions. The blood that you donate can help save more people’s lives.  First, look to see if you know of any blood banks that are located around your work, school or home. If you are healthy, you can safely give blood every 8 weeks! If for various reasons you cannot give blood, try volunteering at a blood bank or the American Red Cross.  For more information, check out United Blood Services.
  4. Be a Role Model - Role models are extremely important for everybody. Everyone looks up to one person or another.  Many times, our role models tend to be family members, friends and co-workers.  Role models provide encouragement, support, and great memories, all of which can make a huge impact in someone’s life.  You can start by searching for formal mentor programs available in your neighborhood. Maybe you can partner with a local school or after school organization.  Further, you can always mentor someone you know but may need some extra encouragement or help outside of normal school or business hours.  Here are some resources to help find role model opportunities in your area,   (These are some resources to help find role model opportunities in your area, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the National Mentoring Partnership.
  5. Create your Family Tree - A family tree is a great way to learn your family’s heritage, but many people do not have their information written down.  You hear stories from your parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents about the time when Jimmy jumped into the pool from your Uncle John’s roof, but sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of who is related to whom. Engage as many relatives and immediate family members you have to learn about your lineage by hosting a family reunion.  If a reunion is not possible, try a simple phone call or email to relatives.  This is a great opportunity to learn about your family and pass along your heritage to your off-spring.  Here are two sites devoted to creating family trees, Geni and MyHeritage.

Random Acts of Kindness Week (Part I)

02/08/2013

February is best known for Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day, but trumping these singular celebrations is a whole week devoted to kind gestures to our fellow man.   Random Acts of Kindness week (Feb 11th-Feb 17th), was created by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation to provide a platform for people to make a difference in the lives of others, a Billhighway core value.random-acts-of-kindess-foundation

On its website the foundation offers a slew of ideas for employees, educators, businesses, institutions, and others to get involved and make someone feel special.  The ideas and resources available are almost endless.  Some are as simple as opening a door for a stranger, buying the person behind you at Starbucks’s a coffee or offering professional services at a reduced rate or free of charge. We’ve compiled ten ideas that are simple to implement either at your office, home, school, or on your own.  The first five ideas are listed below; we’ll post the second set of ideas on Monday.

  1. Donate Books, or Host a Book Drive for a Local Library - Books are an essential tool for learning.  Many kids and adults throughout the country lack proper reading material.  A book drive is a simple and effective way to try and combat these problems.  Set up a bin at your office, and ask people to bring in one book from home they no longer use or want.  Alternatively, bring books from home to a local library. Find a library nearbyHow to donate booksBooks for Kids Organization.
  2. Use Less Plastic - Plastic is used in so many items, it’s almost impossible to avoid.  But the environmental damage plastic waste causes is becoming catastrophic, see the damage here.  This week, and in the future, try to do your part to lessen your carbon footprint. Purchase an inexpensive stainless steel or reusable water bottle.  This will dramatically cut down on your plastic bottle consumption.  Further, bring reusable bags when grocery shopping, and use bio-degradable disposable utensils. More ideas here.
  3. Use an Alternative Method to Get to Work or School - Driving your car can be very wasteful, especially in heavy traffic.  There are also many negative health effects caused by sitting in a car every day, rather than walking or biking to work. See if there is public transportation located near or around your destination.  If so, try the bus or metro and see what it’s like.  Maybe you can read or do work during the ride, rather than worry about merging traffic.  Similarly, instead of using a fossil fuel driven vehicle, try walking or biking to work (see the benefits of biking to work here.)  Finally, if none of those options are available, try carpooling to work.  Even carpooling eliminates the waste of each individual driving their own car.
  4. Plant a Tree or Garden - Trees are essential. They help control the climate, filter the air, protect us from the environment, and create natural beauty. By planting trees, you are improving the overall quality of life for everyone in that area.  See more benefits here. Learn how you can plant a tree virtually anywhere you can get permission to do so.  If planting a tree on your own is not an option, you can wait until Arbor Day, when many people will be planting trees to kick off the spring season. Finally, if you can’t participate in either, you can always donate $1 to have a tree planted in your name.
  5. Give Care Packs to the Homeless/Less Fortunate - The less fortunate do not have the ability to purchase amenities many people use on a daily basis:  toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, socks, healthy snacks, etc.  Click here to see what kind of supplies homeless people may need. Sort through your toiletries at home to see if you have extra’s to donate or go out and purchase bulk items.  Create a number of small packages each with a toothbrush, bar of soap, snacks, socks, etc.   You can hand them out to homeless people you may see, or go to your local homeless shelter and bring in your care packs.  Find a list of local shelters here.

Check back on Monday as we kick off Random Acts of Kindness Week with five more easy to implement ideas!  Post your random acts on Twitter using #rakweek.

For Second Year, Billhighway Selected as a “Cool Place to Work” by Crain’s Detroit Business.

11/08/2012

Billhighway 2012 Cool Place to Work DetroitHere at Billhighway, team members work hard, are challenged, have fun and meaningfully contribute to the success of our nonprofit clients.  Our team also takes the time to serve our community through a variety of service activities.

We think that’s pretty cool, and so do the folks at Crain’s Detroit Business magazine. We’re proud to be named a “2012 Cool Place to Work” by Crain’s Detroit Business.

The Cool Factor

Ranking in the top third of the 2012 small companies category, Billhighway was selected for a fun, inclusive and engaging work atmosphere.

Crain’s partnered with Best Companies Group to manage the program made up of an employer questionnaire and an in-depth survey of Billhighway team members.

Too Cool

As we note in the Billhighway Playbook, attitude is everything!  The team works hard, but having fun refreshes and recharges. It can change our perspective and stimulate creativity, instilling a sense of delight into our products and ultimately our nonprofit clients.

We believe this “cool” spirit makes for a better workplace, a better business practice and better outcomes for our nonprofit clients.

Billhighway helps Metro Detroit family in need

12/06/2011

This year, the Billhighway family adopted a family in need for the holidays. Our team came together to donate clothing, winter boots, grocery store gift certificates, bedding, cleaning supplies, household items and, of course, TOYS!

Billhighway is an organization who feels strongly about supporting our nonprofit clients to make a difference in the world, but also about rolling up our sleeves and making a difference right here in Metro Detroit.

“Being charitable by helping those in our community is important because our community is important,” said David Finn,” Billhighway Client Care Associate.  “Times are hard right now for some, and having the ability to help people in a time of need is not only the right thing to do, but it is also very rewarding. You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t find joy out of being able to put a smile on someone’s face, especially around the holidays.”

Halloween at Billhighway

Celebrating Halloween at Billhighway is always full of laughs. If you are calling in to our Client Care team, you may be unknowingly speaking with Woody Harrelson’s or Wesley Snipes’s character from “White Men Can’t Jump” or Cat in the Hat. Here are some of this year’s highlights.
